If you recently purchased Horizon Organic milk, then it’s time to check your fridge.
On December 13, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) initiated a recall for the Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk 8-ounce 12-Pack. However, on January 14, 2025, the FDA reclassified the recall as Class II, which it defines as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
Specifically, the recall concerns four lots of shelf-stable Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk sold in the United States. It was prompted by the potential for premature product spoilage.
“The voluntary recall was initiated with the knowledge of the U.S. FDA, and it was classified on January 17, 2024, as Class II. A root cause investigation concluded heat damage to the milk during processing that affected milk properties was the primary cause for the premature product spoilage,” Horizon Organic shared in a statement with Food & Wine. “Corrective and preventative actions have been implemented to prevent recurrence. This voluntary recall is not related to an allergen, microorganism, or any pathogen contamination, and no other Horizon Organic products are affected.”
The products’ UPC codes are 3663207113 for the 12-pack packaging and 3663207127 for single units. The product also comes with “Best Before/By” dates between March 3, 2025 and March 7, 2025. In total the recall includes 19,688 total cases. The product was distributed in Arizona, California, and Nevada.
The FDA did not provide specific instructions for what to do if you purchased the recalled product, but it typically requests that customers discard it and not use it. If you did, however, accidentally consume the milk, don’t panic — but keep an eye on any potential symptoms.
“Watch for gastric distress or diarrhea, fever, rash, hives, muscle aches, vomiting or confusion — and especially symptoms that last for more than 24 hours, as that can signal serious dehydration,” Alissa Rumsey, M.S., R.D., and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, previously shared with Food & Wine about what to do if you think you’ve consumed recalled food. “If you have any symptoms after eating a recalled food, it’s best to call your doctor to see if you need to be checked out.”
