These Expert-Approved Pasta Bowls Are On Rare Sale

Good plates come and go, but truly great pasta bowls stick around for years. I’m always on the hunt for magnificent new ways to enjoy the tasty pasta dishes I make — probably why my dinnerware cabinet has become completely unruly — so I’m always keeping an eye out for amazing deals on bowls I want to test out. And while my wife would be forever happy with these $5-apiece bowls we love (and have too many of), there’s one that I’ve been waiting until it was on sale to try. Well, this is not a drill, friends: It just went on sale.

Last year, I talked to Dan Pashman, host of The Sporkful podcast, inventor of the cascatelli pasta shape, and author of Anything’s Pastable, about his favorite pasta bowls. I know few people who love pasta more than he does, and he said his preferred bowl was the Villeroy & Boch Manoir Soup Plate, which is a rare 30% off right now.

The 9-inch Manoir soup plate is made of attractive, glossy porcelain and features a floral pattern around the rim. You might be wondering why Pashman recommended a “soup plate” as his favorite way to eat pasta; I certainly did.

“They’re wide and shallow and look like pasta bowls to me — and we eat 99% of our pasta from those bowls at the dinner table,” he said. He pointed out that the wide lip “gives you a clean area to twirl long pasta on without inadvertently gathering up more pasta than you can fit in your mouth.” He also noted that, unlike your standard pasta plates and bowls, this dish’s wider, lower shape is especially ideal for pastas that have brothy or oily sauces.

Like Pashman, Amazon reviewers praise the bowls for many different reasons. “If you are only going to get one set of dishes and prefer a traditional look, these are perfect,” one shopper wrote, adding that the plates have a certain “classic beauty” to them. “They can be dressed up for special occasions and look great for everyday use, too.” Another shopper praised their “subtle, elegant design” and versatility, writing that the “adorable” bowls “handle pasta, cereal, salads, and ice cream [and] stack reasonably well in the drawer and dishwasher.” This particular fan added that they hunted for the perfect dish for years, ultimately concluding that the Manoir was it.

Whether you’re seeking the perfect daily pasta bowl, looking to upgrade your entertaining game, or just want to see how good a pro-approved pasta bowl can be, there won’t be a better time to try out the Villeroy & Boch Manoir soup plate than right now, while it’s 30% off.
