PC Games Are Outselling Console Games, According to New Industry Report

Since 2021, PC gaming has been on the upswing. The platform now claims 53% of nonmobile gaming sales, according to a report from investment research firm Epyllion, compared to 47% for consoles.

Epyllion CEO Matthew Ball posted a slideshow of his company’s State of Video Gaming in 2025 report, in which he details the way that console gaming has stagnated over the last few years as game consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have aged, and more gamers have taken to playing cross-platform games on PCs.

“Twenty years ago, PC’s share of non-mobile content spend was 29%. It’s now ~53%,” the report says. “And while console has stagnated since 2021, PC has grown 20%.”

As PC Gamer notes, not everyone agrees with Epyllion’s take; a Newzoo report had PC gaming lagging behind consoles by more than $16 billion in 2023.

But 2024 saw several major games catch fire on PC or continue to skew toward that platform. Such games included Baldur’s Gate 3, Helldivers 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Palworld and Diablo 4.

The Epyllion report suggests console gaming has slowed down as cross-platforming gaming has taken off, and as game consoles such as the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 generations have aged. Sony released a new Pro version of its PlayStation 5 in late 2024 and Nintendo finally unveiled its Switch 2 game console Thursday, with more details to come in April.

Ball says PC gamers have access to a much larger library of games, more backward compatibility, the ability to do more multitasking while gaming and more top-range performance than consoles can provide. “Intensifying PC advantages” include more access to formerly console-exclusive games, such as The Last of Us, and games such as Roblox, which offers some premium content only on PC. There’s also the rise of portable Windows and Steam devices such as Valve’s Steam Deck.
