Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft premiered earlier this month on Netflix, but the animated series has already been renewed for a second season. And considering that Netflix has already debuted a picture from Season 2, it looks like the renewal was ordered long before the show’s debut.

Netflix made the announcement on its Tudum site, along with a picture of Lara (Hayley Atwell) reunited with her best friend, Sam Nishimura (The Boys’ Karen Fukuhara), whom she largely lost contact with following the events of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. The eight-episode season took place after the events of 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and were meant to bridge the Lara of the reboot trilogy with her iconic persona from the original Tomb Raider games. Season 1 had a score of 65 on Metacritic, which indicated generally favorable reviews.

Lara and Sam were kept separated in the first season of this series, but the closing moments of the season finale hinted that the next story would revolve around Sam and Lara.

According to Netflix, Season 2’s overarching story will bring Lara and Sam back together to track down some stolen African Orisha masks that have hidden powers and “dark secrets.” Their primary adversary is also described as “a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself.”

Tomb Raider showrunner Tasha Huo briefly teased the theme of next season’s story.

“So Season 1, thematically, is about Lara embracing how her dad dealt with grief, which was isolating,” said Huo. “When we meet Lara, she’s very isolated. As we get into Season 2, we’re trying to build Lara’s team over the course of the show, so she goes from isolated hero, who only wants to do things on her own–a lone wolf–to realizing, ‘Actually, I have this really cool team behind me.'”

Netflix hasn’t set a date for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Season 2 yet, but the first season is currently streaming.
