Black Mirror, the eerie and unsettling futuristic sci-fi series that set the tone by having a man fornicate with a pig for its very first episode, is set to return with new episodes on Netflix in 2025. Series creator Charlie Brooker cooked up six new episodes for the seventh season.
Basically nothing is known about them, except for that one episode will be a sequel to the “USS Callister” episode. This Star Trek-inspired episode featured Jesse Plemons as a programmer of a video game who creates a scenario that becomes too real.
Whether or not Plemons will return is unknown. Black Mirror is known for its celebrity casts. Actors who have appeared in Black Mirror episodes over the years have included Bryce Dallas Howard, Jon Hamm, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Daniel Kaluuya, Josh Hartnett, Miley Cyrus, and Wyatt Russell.
Six episodes might not sound like a lot, but episodes are often longer than one hour each. The Season 3 episode “Hated In The Nation” was 89 minutes long, the show’s longest ever.
Netflix acquired Black Mirror’s rights and now releases the show exclusively on its platform. The newest season, Season 6, premiered in June 2023. In addition to the standard episodes, Netflix released an interactive episode, Bandersnatch, which allowed viewers to make decisions that could change how the story played out.
The announcement of Season 7 is no surprise. Variety reported back in 2023 that Netflix had renewed the show for an additional season, with Brooker signed on to return.
Given the rise of artificial intelligence, many are wondering if a future episode of Black Mirror could riff on this. That remains to be seen, but we do know that Brooker attempted to write an entire episode using ChatGPT, and he said it went terribly.
